Swimming deep, the diver searched for his prize. He grabbed
an oyster and surged back up to the surface. Flinging his hair
back into an arc of sparkling droplets, Tuamanu, the son of
the rain god, held out his hand toward the beautiful girl sitting
in the canoe. She was Maia, daughter of the island chief. Smiling
shyly, the girl opened her hands. A peacock green pearl, big
as a bird's egg and perfectly smooth, lay shimmering in the
sunshine. Tuamanu said: "Think of me when you see rainbows reflecting inside
the pearl, for that is where I live." With those words, he
kissed her and disappeared. Maia smiled, knowing she could visit
him every time she looked into the beautiful black pearl and saw
rainbows flickering back at her in the light. |
