Marae & Plantation Tour
Delve into the mystery of the ancient marae, open-air
sanctuaries where religious ceremonies took place, and savor the
sweet scents of Huahine's fragrant vanilla bean.
Huahine has the distinction of being home to more maraes than any
other Society Island. Twenty-eight maraes and other historic structures
make up the Maeva Site in the northeast part of the island. Maeva
is one of the most fascinating sites in French Polynesia, with is
stone fish traps, temples and fare pote'e, or meeting place. Other
maraes dot the island, including the royal Anini marae at the tip
of Huahine-Iti.
The
rich smell of vanilla permeates the air as you drive up Mount Turi
through plantations of the "Tahitian Gold." Your driver will stop
so you can see the vines up close in a demonstration of hand-pollenation
and cultivation. Don't pass up an opportunity to purchase a small
supply to bring home!
