4x4 Jeep Safari
For those who appreciate natural beauty and authentic
culture, there is no place like Huahine. Actually two islands joined
by an isthmus, Huahine boasts the largest number of maraes
in all of French Polynesia, and it shows them off in natural landscape
that would give the Garden of Eden a run for the money. There is
no better way to see Huahine than on a 4x4 Jeep Safari.
Your easy-going safari guide will pick you up at your hotel. There,
you will join other guests in the back of a Jeep 4x4. Visit Huahine's
many archaeological sites, including ancient maraes, or stone
temples. Prior to European contact, the marae was the sacred
locus of religious ceremonies and civic deliberations. Decisions
and sacrifices-some human-were made on the marae.
Look at the displays and historical objects inside the Marae Maeva
Fare showroom. Then drive up the steepest hills, into the heart
of Huahine's lush emerald green vegetation. The view of the lagoon
from Huahine's summits is unbelievable; take time to photograph
the distinctive aquamarine patterns from here.
Your guide will point out the motus (islets) that dot the
lagoon. Taro and melons thrive on the motus and are some of Huahine's
key crops. Drive to a small private vanilla plantation where you
are given a quick demonstration of how the plant actually yields
its lovely aromatic bean.
Your informative guide will answer your questions during your tour.
He will help in identifying the exotic plants, fruits and spectacular
flowers. And, as with most Polynesians, he will share the bounty
with you, offering pineapple, coconut and other refreshing surprises
along the way!
