Surfing
If surfing's your thing, you won't want to miss
the renowned waves of Ava Mo'a Pass, also known as Fare
Right. The best surfing on Huahine is found here, and at the
pass opposite Fitii. In the south, Parea is the place
for surfing.
Conditions are good all year, but March through October is when
you'll find optimum conditions. Waves are frequent, about 150 ft.
to 450 in length, fast and hollow. The waves are right at Fitii
and Fare Right and left at Fare. All the northern sites are easy
to get to but require a paddle of at least 20 minutes; Fitii is
a very long, 45-minute paddle. Some surfers prefer to take a boat.
The
bottom is rocky and sharp, and there is a lot of coral on the beaches
so it's a good idea to wear shoes. Surfers should bring their
own boards as there are no rentals on Huahine.
Huahine is becoming more popular, and the locals are justifiably
protective. It's very important to get acquainted with the locals
and to be friendly and respectful if you want to surf here.
