Sunday Church
If you are on the island of Huahine on a Sunday,
be sure to attend church. Regardless of your religion, (even if
you're an atheist), this experience is worth hearing. In the morning,
the island women arrive donned in their snow-white dresses and their
hand-crafted straw hats as the congregation waits for the church
doors to open. Go inside with the parish and sit down. Chances
are that you've never heard anything quite like this. The island
women begin with a Tahitian chant that begins slow and silvery and
as it swells, the men join in, turning this into the most hypnotic
harmonious hymn. Before you realize it, you are enveloped in the
Tahitian's answer to gospel! It's like nothing you ever imagined.
This is not an easy thing to find outside of Tahiti's paradise.
You need not understand what is being said if you don't speak French
or Tahitian, just be respectful and your smile will most likely
be answered back ten fold. Enjoy yourself! |
