Faaroa River Trip
Venture up Raiatea 's magnificent, jungle-like Faaroa
River, the only navigable river in French Polynesia. The journey
is only a couple hours from start to finish, and it is overflowing
with sensations. Lush vegetation hugs the banks, with conifers near
the edge and coconut palms, pineapple, taro and vanilla climbing
languidly up the slopes. Local children smile and wave from the
front yards of fares, or houses, clustered along the shore.
The strains of a ukulele are heard just above the sound of fresh
water cascading down the mountains. Warm air brings out the delicious,
gentle fragrance of vanilla and tiare. |
