Rental Car
Rent a car and follow the fortunes
of the road which winds around Tahiti-Nui ("big Tahiti") and the
peninsula of Tahiti-Iti ("little Tahiti"). Spectacular vistas,
pearl and ebony beaches, fascinating historic sites, colorful
gardens, and glimpses of traditional village life await you. (International
driver's license not required.)
There is a main road that encircles Tahiti Nui. Like all public
roads in French Polynesia, this one is marked with û"Poste Kilometre"
markers (PK), each marking of 1 km of distance. You can also exit
the main road to cross the Taravao isthumus and drive down into
the scenic peninsula of Tahiti Iti. Stop along the side of the
road to buy fresh fruits and 'mape', or cooked chestnuts, from
the locals. Enjoy authentic cuisine at some of the small restaurants
on the peninsula.
